A few sushi tips from me

If you want to eat sushi like a local, timing and location matter more than fancy decor. I usually avoid the big tourist traps on Walking Street for sushi, because quality tends to be all over the place. Instead, try the sushi bars near Soi Buakhao or Naklua. Pattaya’s sushi chefs often get their fish fresh daily from the Eastern Seaboard markets, so eating earlier in the day means better texture and taste.

One place I keep going back to is Kanpai Sushi on Soi Buakhao, especially for their spicy salmon rolls and hand rolls. Easy to miss from the street, but the simple menu here delivers every time. Also, keep an eye out for seasonal specials around winter, some spots bring in rarer fish that you won’t find mid-summer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got some sushi questions? Here are answers from a local who’s tasted quite a few rolls in Pattaya.

Honestly, for budget-friendly sushi, I’d recommend checking out the small sushi bars along Soi Buakhao or Thepprasit Road. They’re not fancy but fresh, and the prices won't scare you off. Plus, it’s fun to watch the chefs at work when it’s busy.
You can find authentic sushi, but it’s not always front and center like in Bangkok. Places like Haru Sushi in Naklua tend to stick closer to traditional styles. Just remember, a handful of restaurants mix in Thai flavors, so if you want classic sushi, ask about how they source their fish.
Yep, quite a few sushi spots stay open until 11 or midnight, especially around Beach Road and Walking Street. Though quality can dip late at night, so if you’re picky, try to hit sushi bars earlier in the evening.
Absolutely. Most sushi places in Pattaya do delivery through apps like GrabFood or Foodpanda. Just keep in mind that sushi tastes better fresh out of the kitchen, so go for items like rolls rather than delicate sashimi if you’re ordering in.
Locals often go for spicy tuna or salmon rolls with a bit of a kick, sometimes topped with tempura flakes for crunch. Also, grilled eel sushi is popular, so keep an eye out if you want to try something less raw but still totally Japanese.
Some do, but it’s not super common. I know Sushi Yama and a few upscale places in Central Festival have omakase nights if you’re willing to book ahead and spend a bit more. It’s well worth it for a special meal.
