Wat Khao Din

The Wat Khao Din is a traditional Buddhist monastery that reflects the design of many such compounds scattered across Thailand, but is unique in that few visit this remote location and it remains a pristine example of regional Thai culture, and a perfect place to have an exciting afternoon adventure.

The temple was built on top of a mountain (the “Khao Din”) and the name is literally translated to a temple on the Earth / soil. It was built just 35 years ago and, like many temples, is continually being improved with new additions that are constructed by the 9 resident monks.

The friendly monks allow visitors to tour the premises, including the centre temple that features a holy footprint of Buddha, as well as other traditional buildings where both new and ancient statues and relics are preserved by the monks. The area also features very scenic panoramic views of the entire countryside. This makes it an excellent location for photo taking.

In addition, the drive to the top of the mountain is an adventure in itself, as travellers spiral their way up a dirt road before the temple is discovered at the top.

The Wat Khao Din is located southeast of Pattaya, near the area of Tung Klom and Huay Yai. It is only around half an hour drive from the city centre.
